Summary of my research:
My pedagogic research is primarily focused on teaching and learning in the field. I am part of a multi-disciplinary, collaborative team working in the UK to promote fieldwork in Higher Education curricula and to exchange innovative pedagogic practices. As part of the broad research remit of the Enhancing Fieldwork Learning project, I have focused on several research areas;
My agricultural research into sustainable farming approaches has two main strands; the implementation and monitoring of agri-environmental schemes and the use of integrated pest management techniques. Recent projects include:
- Enhancing fieldwork learning using mobile technologies (France et al., 2015)
- A staff-student partnership at the University of Reading to develop a mobile app for recording biodiversity on the University campus (White et al., 2015)
- Development of a social media based group learning environment for an international multidisciplinary fieldtrip (Thomas et al., 2014)
- Investigations into the provision of Bioscience fieldwork in Higher Education and the implications of funding changes (Mauchline et al., 2013; Maw et al., 2011)
- Evaluation of a novel assessment & feedback approach (ASSET) (Crook et al., 2012)
My agricultural research into sustainable farming approaches has two main strands; the implementation and monitoring of agri-environmental schemes and the use of integrated pest management techniques. Recent projects include:
- PeRsonalised public sErvices in support of the implementation of the CAP (RECAP)
- Integrated pest management of pollen beetles in oilseed rape: The way forward (Mauchline et al., 2017; Mauchline et al., 2013)
- Development of a common generic methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of European Agri-Environment Schemes (AE-Footprint; Mauchline et al., 2012)
Motivation for this workshop
I am looking forward to attending this workshop to understand the learning needs of isolated, rural communities and to explore the potential for enhancement of learning using mobile technologies in remote and non-formal settings. I am keen to share my ideas around participatory research and how citizen science approaches could support educational opportunities in these contexts. In particular, I'm very interested to address the challenge of developing a resource to educate school children about the impact of slash-and-burn agriculture on forest biodiversity. This workshop provides a unique opportunity to bring together my pedagogic and agricultural research interests which I hope, through a collaborative process working with other colleagues, will result in a valuable educational output for the local communities in Northern Thailand.
Future research intentions:
This workshop provides many opportunities to network and identify research needs in Thailand; I look forward to developing collaborative research proposals.
