Background to the challenge
Recent studies and research suggest sexual health issues among Thai adolescents are becoming a considerable problem including a rise in the number of unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. Whilst the evidence indicates that adolescents living in urban areas are more sexually active than in rural areas, it also shows that young people living in more traditional cultures in rural areas lack adequate information and understanding about these issues. One study that explored sex education at schools in Thailand, found the content of existing textbooks to be totally inadequate for young people. Another study reported that sex education in Thai schools was often unsuccessful because of the overly didactic approach adopted by teachers and the lack of suitable teaching resources.
The challenge
At the present, teachers usually teach sex education on human sexual development and sexual health but do not integrate the aspects of attitude to, and consequences of sexual activities.
It is considered that as well as dealing with ‘attitudes and consequences’ teachers should also focus on educating Thai adolescents on the value of Thai culture and how it relates to sex education and especially how to increase the self-esteem of Thai girls. Therefore the challenge, is to use your mobile technologies to sensitively develop a resource/resources to allow appropriate guidelines on the teaching of sex and sexual health in schools so that teachers can adopt a less didactic approach to this delicate subject.
